Nepean Hospital Stage Two Building Construction Complete

Much-needed end-of-life care and further critical health services will be more accessible than ever across Greater Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains by the end of the year. Construction is complete on Nepean Hospital’s Stage Two building on Darug Country, marking the final major component of one of the largest health infrastructure projects ever delivered in the region.

A new main entry and reception are the first signs of the welcoming experience awaiting patients, visitors and staff and offer a clear starting point for navigating what is one of New South Wales’ busiest hospitals. A striking glass sculpture is suspended over the atrium and colourful artworks inspired by the regional landscapes, stories and communities feature throughout the building to support wellbeing, connection and recovery.

Patients from across the diverse region are at the centre of the design. The purpose-built Palliative Care Unit occupies the top floor of the seven-storey building, where contemporary facilities sit within a home-like setting for compassionate and comfortable care for patients and their loved ones. A Mudyin (Family) Centre located near the main entry will provide a culturally safe and appealing space for First Nations patients and families.
The new stage adds an adult Intensive Care Unit, paediatric services, medical and molecular imaging and renal dialysis to the campus. It also includes education and training facilities, an expanded hospital kitchen and a range of clinical support and back-of-house services.

“The Nepean Hospital Redevelopment has transformed an ageing campus into an integrated community wellbeing hub,” said BVN Principal Julian Ashton.
“This significant investment in the evolution of Greater Western Sydney will improve education and research opportunities and generate employment and economic prosperity while advancing health outcomes.”
The Stage Two building connects to the Stage One tower, also designed by BVN and completed in 2022. Planning for the $1 billion redevelopment began in 2010 and the finished buildings conclude our original master plan to improve and expand the campus’ clinical and non-clinical services while the hospital remained operational.
“Completing the project in stages ensured we received real-time feedback. We could see and respond directly to how the design performed for patients and staff, which is rare for large infrastructure projects,” said Senior Practice Director Tim Gibson,
Stage Two of the Nepean Hospital Redevelopment has been delivered by Health Infrastructure in partnership with Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District and building contractor CPB.
