Belonging in the Future
This week BVN is immersed in our own curated festival of ideas: FUTURES FORUM. This is the third iteration of the event which began in 2012 as a forum for learning and discourse. It allows us the space and time to consider significant topics of our time, to nurture us intellectually and bring us together.
FUTURES FORUM 3 puts forward this proposition
In our view, if we are to survive this century we need to synthesize and commit to a range of issues, of which three are particularly pressing:
- Firstly, to seek coalescence with First Nations people so that we can develop a joint and harmonious relationship with the land and a shared future.
- Secondly, to embed fundamental values of respect for the earth in the form of acceptance of the universality of the natural world and embed sustainability as a fundamental societal tenet.
- Thirdly, to understand, embrace and celebrate technology.
Consequently, FUTURES FORUM 3 seeks an understanding of how these issues weave a motion of belonging and embedment. Hence: “Belonging in the Future”.

Ngulmiya Ngulmiya Nundhirribala is an iconic singer with a godlike voice. He shares improvisations on private ceremony songs and Dhumbala (Red Flag) songs that developed over centuries through his family's long relationship with the Makassan traders from old Indonesia. His debut album "Ngulmiya" features collaborative work with producer/song writer Anthony Gray, his son and songman Nayurryurr, the Budapest Art Orchestra and arrangers Luke Howard and Felix Watson. Ngulmiya leads the traditional dance group Red Flag Dancers, directs the Numburindi Festival, leads the band Yilila and has featured with the G20 Orchestra, Australian Ballet and Bangarra Dance Theatre.
